SHIP and SMP Volunteer Program
What do SHIP and SMP volunteers do?
The State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, is a national program that offers one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is a national program to help people of all ages with Medicare avoid, detect, and prevent health care scams, fraud, and abuse.
Benefit Counselor
As a SHIP/SMP volunteer, you play a crucial role in providing benefits counseling on Medicare, the Medicare prescription drug program, and subsidy programs that assist with Medicare premiums and reduce deductibles. This position is pivotal in ensuring that older New Mexicans have access to accurate and unbiased information about their healthcare options without selling, endorsing, or recommending any specific insurance plans.
By volunteering with New Mexico SHIP/SMP, you will deliver essential services to your community, including:
– Guiding beneficiaries through the Medicare enrollment process.
– Assisting seniors with limited income to reduce their healthcare costs.
– Educating the community on health insurance matters.
– Advocating for the rights of beneficiaries.
Volunteers receive comprehensive training in Medicare insurance, benefits, and fraud prevention to effectively address and evaluate beneficiaries’ needs.
Volunteers from diverse backgrounds bring a wealth of experience and skills, enhancing the support provided to those in need. Key attributes of SHIP and SMP volunteers include excellent communication skills, sensitivity, reliability, perseverance, and a strong desire to contribute positively to their community.
