Adult Protective Services (APS)

in New Mexico is a division of the Aging and Long-Term Services Department, mandated by state law to investigate alleged abuse, neglect, and exploitation for adults aged 18 and older who are unable to safeguard themselves.

Core Responsibilities

Investigations: APS investigates reports of suspected self-neglect, abuse, neglect, or exploitation of vulnerable adults.

Protective Services: When necessary, APS provides protective services to ensure the safety and well-being of at-risk adults. APS utilizes the least restrictive means as possible.

Adult Abuse Prevention: APS works to prevent elder abuse, which can include physical, emotional, and financial exploitation.

Our Mission

To protect vulnerable adults from abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation by investigating and providing or arranging for services to stop or prevent further harm.
