State celebrates the role of senior centers in healthy aging

SANTA FESenior centers are cornerstones of healthy aging, providing older New Mexicans with opportunities for connection, learning, and essential services that help them live independently and with dignity.

The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) recognizes September as National Senior Center Month and National Healthy Aging Month.

“Across the state, senior centers enrich the lives of New Mexicans every day by providing essential services, like meals, transportation, joy, purpose and connection,” said Emily Kaltenbach ALTSD Cabinet Secretary. “We are honored to celebrate and uplift their contributions this month and all year long.”

New Mexico’s senior centers provide services made possible through federal, state, and local funding. With that support, seniors across the state have access to:

  • Nutritional meals that support health and wellness.
  • Programming that supports physical, mental, and social wellness.
  • Services such as transportation and caregiver support.

ALTSD encourages all New Mexicans 60 years and older to visit their local senior center and find opportunities to volunteer or participate in events throughout September. To find a senior center in your area, visit our interactive map at https://www.aging.nm.gov/senior-center-locations/.

Additionally, New Mexicans interested in learning more about programs and resources available to support healthy aging can attend the 47th Annual Conference on Aging, happening September 23-25th at the Glorieta Convention Center.
