Investing in New Mexico’s Senior Centers: New Mexico Aging Services Capital Outlay Vision

The New Mexico Aging Services Department (NMAS) continues its steadfast commitment to New Mexico’s older adults through the Capital Outlay program, guided by NMAS’s mission: “To provide accessible, integrated services to older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers to assist them in maintaining their independent, dignity, autonomy, health, safety and economic well-being, thereby empowering them to live on their own terms in their own communities as productively as possible. Our commitment ensures our senior centers remain safe, accessible, and welcoming for years to come.

Capital Outlay currently oversees $106 Million in appropriated funding across 339 multi-year capital projects, supporting more than 250 senior centers across the state. Capital Outlay appropriations fund both local government and tribal governments throughout New Mexico, covering planning and design, new construction, renovation, code compliance, new additions, vehicle purchases, and other equipment.

Looking ahead, Capital Outlay receives over 100 applications annually for funding consideration for capital outlay funding. These applications are submitted by local governments as well as Nations, Pueblos and Tribes (NPTs). Applications are evaluated based on potential impact, alignment with state priorities, feasibility, and operation sustainability. A list of recommendations are then submitted for consideration in the upcoming Legislative Session.

Senior Centers serve as hearts of communities, offering connection, support, fitness classes and congregate meals. With more than 250 senior centers providing daily and weekly activities across the state, Capital Outlay funding ensures these vital hubs can delivery necessary resources for years to come. As our senior population grows, this investment in infrastructure remains critical to helping older New Mexicans age safely with dignity and staying connected to their communities.
