Free Medicare help available to New Mexicans during Fall Open Enrollment
SANTA FE – Medicare beneficiaries can get free, unbiased help reviewing their health care coverage during the Medicare Fall Open Enrollment period, which runs October 15 through December 7.
The annual enrollment period gives Medicare beneficiaries an opportunity to review their current coverage, compare available plans and make changes for the coming year.
“Health care needs can change, and so can Medicare coverage,” said Emily Kaltenbach, Aging Department cabinet secretary. “Taking some time to review your options now can help you understand what you’ll pay, avoid surprises, and select the coverage that is best for you and your family in the year ahead.”
New Mexicans do not have to navigate Medicare decisions on their own. The Aging and Disability Resource Center connects Medicare beneficiaries with counselors through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). SHIP counselors provide free, unbiased information and assistance and can help beneficiaries:
-
Compare Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans.
-
Understand changes to their current coverage.
-
Review prescription drug costs and plans.
-
Understand Medicare options and benefits.
-
Explore programs that may help with Medicare costs.
-
Get assistance enrolling in a different plan when appropriate.
Even beneficiaries who are satisfied with their current plan may want to review their coverage each year. Plans can change their costs, benefits, covered services, provider networks and prescription drug formularies.
For free Medicare assistance, New Mexicans can call 800-432-2080 or visit aging.nm.gov to get connected with a SHIP counselor or find more information.
