SANTA FE – New Mexicans will now have access to more coordinated and comprehensive support for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and their caregivers through the Long-Term Care Division.
The newly re-activated division will oversee a range of critical programs, including New MexiCare, the Veterans-Directed Care Program, the Office of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, Care Transitions, and the Kinship Caregiver Pilot Program. Together, these programs form the foundation of the Department’s programmatic services, empowering New Mexicans to age with dignity, independence and support.
“The inclusion of this division marks a pivotal moment in how we deliver care to New Mexicans,” said Emily Kaltenbach, Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) Cabinet Secretary. “By housing these vital programs under one focused division, we are ensuring that families, caregivers, and individuals living with complex needs have streamlined access to high-quality, person-centered care.”
The division will also lead efforts to expand caregiver support, build dementia-capable infrastructure and strengthen community-based services throughout the state. Top priorities for the division include ensuring continuity of care, caregiver training and improving access in rural and tribal communities.
“This is about building out a care system where no one falls through the cracks,” said Dr. Angelina Flores-Montoya, ALTSD Deputy Cabinet Secretary. “With the launch of this division, we’re not just reorganizing; we are deepening our commitment to serving the full continuum of long-term care needs in New Mexico.”
